Nicole Tolhurst, now 29-years-old, was involved in a serious car accident on 29 November, 2007. On the corner of Carrington and Marmion Streets in Palmyra, Nicole’s car went over the bonnet of another vehicle and continued through a brick wall. Nicole was unconscious and slumped over the steering wheel of her car, unable to breathe.
Thanks to the quick thinking of her rescuer (Rod Baltovich), Nicole is alive today to tell her amazing story. Rod had recently completed a first aid course with St John Ambulance and knew that he had to assist Nicole before the arrival of the ambulance.
With a basic knowledge of first aid, Rod knew that that it took only four minutes for an unconscious road accident victim (with no other serious injury) to die from a blocked airway.
By tilting Nicole’s head back and unblocking her airway before the arrival of the ambulance, Rod’s basic first aid skills allowed Nicole to start breathing again and undoubtedly saved her life.
